As UC Davis Health Center’s new Parking Structure IV serves hospital and critical medical staff, it was important that the building be designed to remain operable following a disaster event. Therefore, the design team elected to utilize a precast hybrid moment frame system, which is a lateral force resisting system design to be self-righting after a major seismic event, enabling immediate re-occupancy of the structure.

This critical infrastructure design resulted in a Platinum rating and makes Parking Structure IV the first hospital campus and University of California-owned building to be rated by the US Resiliency Council (USRC).

The USRC Rating for earthquakes assessment awards one to five stars based on a building’s expected resiliency during a seismic event in three categories – safety, damage and recovery – and is modeled after the US Green Buildings Council (USGBC®) LEED® rating system for sustainable design.
