Not familiar with Leap’s mission or the event? Leap makes it possible for over 7,000 students in over 30 schools in the San Francisco Bay Area to have hands-on learning experiences in the arts. In 1983, Leap held their first Sandcastle Contest to raise funds to support their programs.
Teams are made up and sponsored by architects, designers, engineers, contractors and corporations and paired with local elementary school children. Before the event, teams meet with students in the classroom to develop ideas based on a set theme. This year’s theme is “Food, Glorious Food!” Clay models are shaped and strategies and plans for the contest day are developed.
The event is free to the community. After the whistle blows on October 11, the teams will have 4 hours to complete their masterpiece. The event provides a great learning experience for all involved and last year’s event raised $250,000.
