Reflecting on the 2019 DBIA Western Pacific Region Conference

Image of Reflecting on the 2019 DBIA Western Pacific Region Conference The San Diego International Airport Terminal 2 Parking Plaza received both the Design Excellence Award & the Design Distinction Award at the 2019 DBIA Western Pacific Conference.

Attracting design-build thought leaders throughout the region, this year’s event broke another record with attendance of over 400 owners, contractors and designers. Set in the beautiful Meritage Resort & Spa in Napa, the new, longer multiday conference provided more opportunities to network. With many sessions framed as panels, the event continues to serve as a portal into the Western Pacific Region’s approach to design-build delivery.

Owners shared valuable insight into what they are looking for and the challenges they see. Stuart Eckblad from UCSF discussed the strong vision and passion they look for from teams and went on to relate that they want to hear how buildings make things better for their patients and staff. He also shared that he sees teams struggle to create an environment were true collaboration can happen. Architects offered valuable insight on topics such as the costs of pursuing design-build. For example, David Crotty from HOK candidly shared that they have chosen to limit their design-build pursuits each year to mitigate the costs involved.

No reflection on this event could be complete without mentioning Chad Hymas’s Key Note. There was not a dry eye in the house as we listened to his personal story and more importantly no audience member was not moved by his challenge to be “the better you. Being the better you is not just about you, it’s about all the people whose life you will make better along with you.”

Following a packed schedule of sessions, the conference recognized outstanding design-build projects. Our team, along with our partners from Swinerton were proud to have received both the Design Excellence Award & the Design Distinction Award for our San Diego International Airport Terminal 2 Parking Plaza project.

Watry Design is proud to have supported this conference since its inception three years ago and looks forward to continuing to participate for years to come!
