Sand Hill Property had a bold vision to transform the struggling Vallco Shopping Mall into a vibrant mixed use community with the largest green roof in the world. The Hills at Vallco aimed to create a new "down town" for the City of Cupertino that emphasized a walkable, sustainable lifestyle. The centerpiece of the project was a 30 acre green roof that featured 3.8 miles of walking and running trails, vineyards, orchards and a nature preserve for native plants and birds. The project also featured 2 million square feet of office space and 625,000 square feet of commercial and civic space that included a 10,000 square foot Innovation Center in support of local high schools.
Watry Design, Inc. was brought on board to provide parking master planning services for this massive project, which involved 9,175 parking stalls, 6,000 of which were subterranean. Smart parking technologies were incorporated into the design to meet sustainability goals and help the project achieve LEED Platinum status.
The design for this project was named “Best Mixed Use Project” at the 15th annual Architectural Review’s MIPIM Future Projects Awards in Cannes, France.
